Motherhood is a workout. Sure chocolates, flowers and cards are nice to receive on mother’s day, but what about a new set of dumbbells or leggings or new sneakers? As moms we have a tendency to buy the very best for our children, friends and loved-ones, but leave our own needs or desires on the back burner.
One of the most common reasons I receive from patients as to why they are not able to workout and rehab their body postpartum is due to lack of time, lack of proper instruction regarding what is safe and how to progress their workouts, and lack of equipment at home since gym workouts are not in the cards at the moment. I get it – you don’t want to spend money on yourself and a new workout bench seems trivial, but your health is important – put on your oxygen mask first.
So here is a list of fitness-related gifts for you to send to your significant other or family members to help you prioritize your health and well-being without the guilt of spending the money on yourself. Mom guilt is real!
Hampton Fitness 10 Pair Tower – This is the one I have from Hampton Fitness and it was a huge splurge but SO worth it. I never envisioned myself as someone only working out from home – but having a baby changes everything! I do miss the gym and hope to get back to it one day, but for this current season of life I am so glad to have invested in this set.
Athletic Supply 5-25lb Set – This is another great option for a variety of dumbbell sizes at a much more affordable price range. This was what I almost got before I found the other tower.
Pottery Barn Neutral Kettlebells – If you are in need of some kettlebells, I have a few of these from Pottery Barn and love that they add a little bit of color. If your gym set up is visible to the rest of the house like mine then you might enjoy some aesthetically pleasing weights – ha!
Reebok Adjustable Bench – This is the exact one I have in my home gym set up and cannot say enough great things about it. You can incline the top as well as adjust the feet to make it lower for a smaller step. There is also a hidden compartment under the top to store bands – a major win for small spaces.
Lululemon Align Leggings – It is safe to say I live in these leggings. I have them in more colors than I care to admit. I wore them throughout my pregnancy in a size up. You truly cannot go wrong and you always need another pair of leggings!
ProForm Adjustable Dumbbells – If you do not have room for a full dumbbell tower, then this adjustable set is for you! This is the set I used for years when I needed to sneak in a workout at home, and now I keep them at my mom’s home incase I’m over there and need to work out.
Women’s Wool Runners – They say you spend the most amount of time sleeping on your mattress or standing on your feet, so you should spend good money on both your mattress and your shoes. I fell in love with my Allbirds during pregnancy as they really helped to support the extra weight. Ideally you should replace your sneakers at least once a year – more if you are a runner!
Chirp Wheel – We have the 6in wheel at the clinic and I do not think a single patient has ever been disappointed after using the Chirp. It is one of the best tools to improve thoracic spine mobility and it is far more comfortable than a traditional foam roller due to the spine cut out. Between feeding children, typing on computers and texting on phones, we could all benefit from working on thoracic spine mobility.
Lululemon Scuba Half-Zip – Lululemon makes this in a version without a hood as well. I do not have a preference for one or the other, but I am obsessed with the entire Scuba line in general. The Scuba half-zip hoodie is the perfect amount of oversize without being super long. It goes great with any high-waisted leggings and is great to wear when breastfeeding! I paired this sweatshirt with a nursing bra countless times when out in public and the cropped style makes it easy to pull up for feeding.
Lululemon Like A Cloud Sports Bra – This bra offers light to medium support, and it truly lives up to its name – it feels like you are wearing a cloud. The material is thick enough that you do not need any pad inserts, but it is stretchy enough that you do not feel suffocated. It it perfect for strength training and other low impact movement – or everyday wear if you live in workout clothes like me!
Takeya 22oz Water Bottle – This size fits perfectly into a cupholder and I love the spout rather than a straw because it is so much easier to clean. I have yet to jump on the Stanley cup trend, and honestly may never do so because I love this water bottle so much.
Lululemon Align Biker Shorts – I prefer the 6in version of the shorts – not too long, but not too short. I never imagined myself wearing biker shorts this much, but they are so versatile to wear while working out or running errands. Check out the version with pockets for even more convenience!
